Off-Reserve Post Secondary Student Support Program
Who We Are
Training and Economic Development administers the Off-Reserve Post Secondary Student Support Program on behalf of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
The objective of the student support program is to provide financial support to enable Off-Reserve Miawpukek First Nations to gain access to post secondary education and to graduate with the qualifications and skills needed to pursue individual careers and to contribute to the achievement of Indian self-government and economic self reliance. The purpose of this is to provide assistance and not total comprehensive coverage for all Post-Secondary costs.
Eligibility
- Be a Treaty/Status Indian which means: A person whose name has been entered in the Indian Register maintained by the department as defined by the Indian Act;
- Be a registered member of the Miawpukek Band;
- Have been resident in Canada for the twelve consecutive months prior to the date of application;
- Have met University or College entrance requirements and have been re-enrolled or accepted for the enrolment in a post-secondary institution for a program of studies;
- Have fully completed an application form with all supporting documentation (proof of all of the above criteria).
Selection Process
All applications are date stamped upon receipt. Once the deadline for acceptance of applications has passed, all students are divided into two categories based on priority. Applicants are then selected on a first-come, first-serve basis within each category. Category 1 Students are the first order of priority for funding, then category 2.
Category 1
Continuing Students
- A. Continuing students who are successful last year, either in completing high school or pursuing studies in a post-secondary program, who have been accepted into either their first or next year of a university or college program leading to at least a two year certificate, diploma or degree.
- B. Continuing students who have been accepted in post-secondary programs not normally sponsored by HRDC and requiring less than two years for completion.
- C. Continuing students who meet the requirements set out in the UCEP Policy who need a year in order to qualify for entrance to post-secondary programs requiring two or more years for completion.
- D. Students who were previously accepted into a program and would have been continuing students but could not be supported last year because funds were not available.
Category 2
Non-Continuing Students (students not currently attending high school or post-secondary studies.)
- Students who were not in school in the year immediately prior to their application for assistance and who remained unfunded because funds were not available but who have, agind, been accepted into a university or college program of at least two years in length.
- Students who have been accepted into a university or college program of at least two years in lenght but who were not in school last year.
- Students who were not in school in the year immediately prior to the initial application for assisstance and who remained unfunded because funds were not available but who have again been accepted in a post-secondary program not normally sponsored by HRDC and requiring less than two years for completion.
- Students who meet the requirements set out in the UCEP Policy who need a year in order to qualify for entrance to post-secondary programs requiring two or more years for completion
- Students who have been accepted in a post-secondary program not normally sponsored by HRDC and requiring less than two years for completion
Funding
Once an applicant is approved for student support, funding is provided to cover the following:
- Tuition, including books and supplies.
- Living allowance, including dependents.
- Travel, where applicable.
Please note that all applications for funding or incentives received will be subject to availability of funding. If an applicant meets all the eligibility criteria, it does not mean automatic approval for student support. This means that applications will be approved based on funding availability.
Your post secondary cheques will arrive on time if you ensure that the information required reaches this office by the due dates as indicated below. Please refer below for important dates and documentation required.
Please note that students are responsible for obtaining and submitting a completed application form for each semester/year of your program in order for funding to be released for the upcoming semester/year. Absolutely NO applications will be accepted after the deadline dates and no funds will be released until final official transcripts are received.
